Among the most unspoiled and inviting getaways in Texas is the beatiful Lake Whitney area.  Lake Whitney was one of the earliest recreational lakes built along the Brazos River near the Dallas/Fort Worth area.  This 955-acre lake was completed in April 1951 as part of the Brazos River Conservation and Reclamation Program.  Lake Whitney is maintained by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District.  The lake is situated five miles from Whitney on the Hill and Bosque County lines.  Area communities include Hillsboro, Clifton, Meridian, Aquilla, Morgan, Lakeside Village, Laguna Park, Blum, Valley Mills, and Kopperl.

The Lake Whitney State Park was named Park of the Month by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in July 2004, and features 137 campsites, screened shelters, swimming beaches, boat ramps, and an air strip.  On Lake Whitney you'll find four full service marinas and over 30 places to stay, including cabins, cottages, bed and breakfasts, condos, and lodges.

Lake Whitney's reputation as a hotspot for bass fishing is a big draw for fishing enthusiasts from around the country.  Field and Stream magazine ranked a lakeside resort at Lake Whitney as one of "the top 5 places in the U.S. to eat, sleep, and live bass" in May 2004.

The Lake Whitney area also boasts three public 18-hole golf courses and thousands of acres of winding trails for horseback riding.  Bird and wildlife enthusiasts enjoy the lake area's 300 migratory and nonmigratory birds, and a local wildlife population that features over 50 different species of animals, including white-tailed deer and turkey.

Lake Whitney is easy to access from the four largest metropolitan areas of the state, yet the lake is only used by about 2 million per year.  This is a great getaway for those who enjoy relaxation or recreation!
